I didn't think it was time yet. I checked the date, and to my surprise, it matched ours exactly, day for day. That confused me even more, and for a few seconds I actually panicked, running the math, wondering how I had let our anniversary sneak up on me.\n\nThen I looked again. The day was right, but the month was off by one. Relief, followed about half a second later by a new question: why was she texting me our anniversary a month early? That is when I noticed it was a group text. She was wishing some friends a happy anniversary, and I had just spent thirty seconds convinced I had forgotten my own.\n\nI was happy about that, honestly. After all these years, I still had not become so complacent that I could actually forget it.\n\nPicture the other version of that story: a husband who says \"I love you\" the same flat, mundane way, every single day, for twenty years. Same three words, same tone, barely looking at her when he says it. Technically true, but nobody is fooled by it anymore.\n\nAny couple that has stayed married a long time knows what it takes to avoid that. You keep doing date night. You keep finding something new to notice or say, because what else is going to keep it from going stale?\n\nIs that not also a decent picture of what worship turns into? Same words, same prayer, on autopilot. Not lying, exactly. Just not really there anymore.\n\nPsalm 98 refuses to do that. ([Read the whole psalm here.](https:\u002F\u002Fwww.bible.com\u002Fbible\u002F1713\u002FPSA.98.CSB)) It opens in one place and doesn't sit still. By the end, it doesn't stop until the whole planet is singing along.\n\n# A New Song, Not a Rerun\n\n> Sing a new song to the LORD, for he has performed wonders; his right hand and holy arm have won him victory. (Psalm 98:1, CSB)\n\n\"New song\" is not a one-off line. It shows up again and again across the Psalms, and it is not necessarily asking for new lyrics. It is asking whether your praise is still tied to something God actually did, or whether you are just running the old tape on repeat.\n\n\"His right hand and holy arm\" is the picture of someone rolling up a sleeve to do something alone, no help from anyone else. This was not a group effort. God did this himself.\n\nSo what has he actually done for you lately? Did you notice it, name it, praise him for it specifically, or did it just pass by while you moved on to the next crisis?\n\n> The LORD has made his victory known; he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations. He has remembered his love and faithfulness to the house of Israel; all the ends of the earth have seen our God's victory. (Psalm 98:2-3, CSB)\n\nThis starts as one nation's story. Israel, the ancient people God rescued and stayed loyal to, gets named specifically in verse 3. One particular people, one particular rescue.\n\nBut verse 2 already cracks the door open. God made his rescue known \"in the sight of the nations.\" Not kept private. He did this out where everybody was watching, on purpose.\n\nThat was not an accident. Centuries earlier, God had told Abraham, the man he chose to start this whole story, that Abraham's family would end up being the way God blesses \"all the peoples on earth\" (Genesis 12:3, CSB). Paul, one of the earliest leaders of the Christian church, later called that same promise \"the gospel\" preached to Abraham in advance, saying \"all the nations will be blessed through you\" (Galatians 3:8, CSB). So when this psalm says God made his rescue known to the nations, it is that old promise starting to happen in real time. One nation's rescue song was always headed toward the whole world hearing it.\n\n# Loud on Purpose\n\n> Let the whole earth shout to the LORD; be jubilant, shout for joy, and sing... With trumpets and the blast of the ram's horn shout triumphantly in the presence of the LORD, our King. (Psalm 98:4-6, CSB)\n\nThe circle just got bigger. It is no longer just Israel. Now it is the whole earth, every nation on it, exactly what God had promised Abraham all along.\n\nThis also is not meant to be background music. In the ancient world, what did a trumpet and a ram's horn actually announce? A king taking the throne, or the start of the Jubilee, a nationwide year when debts were canceled, slaves were freed, and land returned to its original owners. This is a coronation shout, not a hymn hummed quietly from the back pew.\n\nThe old preacher Charles Spurgeon put it about as well as it can be put: \"The song comes from the heart, otherwise the music is nothing but a noise in his ears, whether it be caused by human throats, or organ pipes, or far resounding trumpets.\" When is the last time you actually sang like you meant it, instead of just moving your mouth because it was time to stand up?\n\n# Even the Rivers Aren't Bored\n\n> Let the sea and all that fills it, the world and those who live in it, resound. Let the rivers clap their hands; let the mountains shout together for joy before the LORD, for he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world righteously and the peoples fairly. (Psalm 98:7-9, CSB)\n\nNow the circle swallows everything. Sea, rivers, mountains. It started with one nation, and it does not stop until every rock and wave on the planet is in on the song too.\n\n\"He is coming to judge the earth\" sounds like a threat if you read it too fast. But is a judge coming always bad news? In the ancient world, judges took bribes and played favorites. A judge who is actually fair and cannot be bought was relief, not dread, especially if you were the one regularly on the losing side of injustice. For most of history, \"the judge is coming\" meant the powerful were about to get away with it again. This judge, however, does not play that game.\n\nC.S. Lewis pictured this in the Narnia stories. Here is the scene, as I remember it: the White Witch has trapped the land in permanent winter, no Christmas, nothing ever changing. What is that winter, if not a world where nothing is allowed to come alive? When Aslan, the lion who represents Christ in that story, finally comes back, the ice starts cracking. Flowers push up through snow that had sat there for a hundred years. The rivers actually start moving again.\n\nFor years, watching the Narnia movies was a New Year's tradition in our house, and I have always loved that image: new life breaking out everywhere at once, water rushing again, the whole world starting to bustle. That is the picture here. Creation is not groaning under this King. It is finally free to make noise.\n\nNo mountain has ever phoned it in. No river has ever gone through the motions. If creation itself cannot stay quiet about him, what is our excuse?\n\n# The Takeaway\n\nDo not let this week's prayer and worship be a rerun of last week's. A \"new song\" does not always have to mean new words. What it always means is a fresh reason, something real God actually did that you have not said out loud yet. Say it like you mean it.\n\nAnd do not stop at you. This whole psalm started with one nation's rescue and did not stop until the whole world was in on it.
